Martha Lane Pope Toedte went home peacefully to be with Jesus in the late evening of Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was surrounded by her loving family. Martha was born to Isaac Harris and Eugenia Katie Mae Powell Pope on April 7, 1940 in Anniston, Alabama. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, George Burl Toedte; daughters, Eugenia ‘Gena’ Toedte and Vicki Long (Charlie); grandchildren, Taylor Chapman and Brooke Long, and great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Blayke. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Shirley Shaddix and Bettye Pate; sister-in-law, Frances Pope; many nieces and nephews that she loved with all her heart, and her cat, Abby, that was always by her side. She is preceded in death by her father and mother; brother, Rev. Clark Pope, and brothers-in-law, Mike Shaddix and Hulen Pate. Martha was a graduate of UAB Dentistry School as a dental hygienist. She worked for many years in the Medical Arts building in Anniston. It was there she met George and fell in love. She was always involved in the community and served as president of the United Methodist Women groups in all of the churches in various cities she and George lived in. Her outgoing personality and love for the arts and music started early on as being on the 1962 Maid of Cotton court, playing first chair trumpet at Wellborn High School and singer in the Joy Belles Chorus. Her creative side led her to own various businesses in Anniston such as To-Lips Crafts and Wallpaper For You. Her greatest love was family, friends and being a faithful servant of Christ. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Anniston First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Pope, Rev. Keith Pope, and Rev. Paul Lawler officiating. A burial will follow the service at Eulaton United Methodist Church. Charlie Long, Greg Pate, Heath Shaddix, Rick Grove, Jeff Pope, Michael Shaddix, Matthew Shaddix, Matthew Pate, Jackson Pate, Gary Toedte, and Ed Toedte will serve as pallbearers.
