Phoebe Mullendore Strickland, age 88, of Oxford, Alabama passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at NHC Healthcare Nursing Home in Anniston, Alabama. She is survived by two sisters, Judith Kay Suttle of W. Rutland, VT., and Edith Fay (Luther) Richardson of Senoia, GA; nieces, Mandy R. Rigler of Rutland, VT., Stephanie (Dan) O’Bryon of Lancaster, PA., Stacy (Jim) Wiglesworth of Smyrna, GA., and Kim (Tommy) Randolph of Lake Park GA. Nephews, Keith (Carol) Hudson of Alexandria, AL. and Scott (Susan) Richardson of Houston, TX; great nieces, Emma O’Bryon of Bethesda, MD., and Caroline Wiglesworth of Senoia, GA; great nephews, Ben O’Bryon of Boca Raton, FL., Jacob and Christopher Wiglesworth of Senoia, GA; step-niece, Brandy (Antonio) Almeida of Jacksonville, AL; and step-nephew, Hurlbut (Natalie) of Alexandria, AL. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas “Tommy” and Helen Mullendore; husband, William Charles Strickland; son, Charles Alan Strickland and sister Penelope “Penny” Hudson. Phoebe graduated from Alexandria High School and attended Jacksonville State University. She married William Charles Strickland in 1959. They had one son, Charles Alan Strickland. She was a loving and devoted wife and a devoted, dedicated, nourishing and loving mother to their special needs son. She never complained about the situation and always said, “He was the one missing out on life.” She was actively involved with charities for the mentally disabled, including the ARC of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties and Rainbow Omega in Eastaboga, Alabama, in which her husband was instrumental in its organization and served on its Board of Directors. She was a loving and wonderful sister and an especially fun aunt to her nieces and nephews. She played the piano by ear and could make a piano come alive with music. She had a beautiful alto voice and sang with a quartet at funerals and at her church. She grew up attending McCoy United Methodist Church in Anniston and attended the Oxford Church of Christ with her husband during their many years of marriage. The staff at NHC Place (assisted living) and NHC Healthcare (nursing home) always talked about how sweet she was and how much they loved her. Her family is so appreciative and thankful for all those who took care of her during these past ten years. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Forestlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Anniston, Alabama with Keith Hudson officiating. Pallbearers will be Keith Hudson, Luther Richardson and the Miller Funeral Home staff. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Phoebe M.
