Mildred L. Newman

Services for Mrs. Newman will be Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 4pm at Parker Memorial Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm in the Parker Memorial Sanctuary. Mildred L. Newman went to be with her Lord on May 4, 2024, at the age of 100. Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Virginia Lawrence of Lyndon, Kentucky; her husband, Charles W. Newman; her sister, Dorothy Borie; and brother, Jimmy Lawrence. Mrs. Newman is survived by her son, Charles W. Newman Jr., (Norma Newman); granddaughters, Kristen Toombs (Matt) of Memphis, Tennessee, Erin Pearce (Andy), of Memphis, Tennessee; grandsons, Charles William Newman III of Oxford, Alabama and James Paul Newman of Oxford, Alabama; great grandchildren, Harrison, Annie Vance, and Fox Toombs, Cole, Davis, Charlie, and Lewis Pearce; nieces and nephews, James Bennett, Joe Bennett, Kay Hubbard, David Bennett, Jon Borie, Tom Borie, Danny Abbott, Linda Chaudoin, and Jay Lawrence. Mildred Newman grew up in Lyndon, Kentucky and became a registered nurse. Charlie and Mildred Newman moved to Alabama so Mr. Newman could work at Bennett Lumber in Piedmont. Mr. Newman founded Oxford Lumber in 1958 and Mrs. Newman later joined her husband at Oxford Lumber and worked there until her fall November 2, 2023. Together they founded Roanoke Ace Home Center and Talladega Ace Home Center. Mrs. Newman worked after Mr. Newman’s death (1999) and worked as bookkeeper for the company. During her career at Oxford Lumber, Mrs. Newman made many friends. Mrs. Newman loved her family, friends, and employees. She was a giver who did not relish the spotlight or recognition and worked long hours in the business. She was a meticulous bookkeeper and loved working. Mrs. Newman was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Norton Nursing School Alumnus, and gave to numerous Christian organizations and causes to further the Gospel of Christ. The family would like to express thanks to the many friends who visited and medical professionals, as well as the caregivers who cared for her. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Newman would want donations to organizations that spread the Gospel of Christ.
