After recently celebrating his 95th birthday, George Burl Toedte went to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on June 27th 2025. George was born to Frank and Allie Toedte on June 10th, 1930 in Centralia, Illinois. He was the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters by 10 years. He is survived by daughters Eugenia ‘Gena’ Toedte and Vicki Long (Charlie), grandchildren, Taylor Chapman and Brooke Long, and great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Blayke, and Bolton. He is also survived by sister in laws, Shirley Shaddix and Bettye Pate, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved so very much. “Abby the cat” was his constant sidekick. He is preceded in death by his wife Martha Pope Toedte of 54 years, and wife JoNell McCall Toedte of 9 years who died in 1965. Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Ralph, Frank, Theodore, Fern, Beatrice, Leah, Oneta, Charlotte and Hyacinth. Also preceded were his second parents Harris and Katie Pope, and Enzor and Helen Johnson. In addition his best friend, Dr. Jerry Higgins, whom he considered as his brother. George was Airman First Class serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from Auburn University as a textile engineer using his special skills of designing and manufacturing ribbon and tape in mills in Alabama, North Carolina, and Indiana. He and Martha enjoyed the towns where they lived. They loved people and served through church and the community. George was active in Junior Achievement, Rotary Club, Boys Club, Industrial Management Club, Chamber of Commerce, and United Methodist Men. He enjoyed fishing and golf, and made a hole in one at Anniston Country Club. After retirement, he and Martha loved their “Wallpaper For You” business where they were with friends daily. His special joy with Martha was decorating for Christmas and having family gatherings. His gentle spirit will live on through all those who knew him. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday July 9th at 12 noon at Anniston First United Methodist Church, located at 1400 Noble St. Anniston, AL, with nephews Rev. Mike Pope, Rev. Keith Pope, and Rev. Paul Lawler officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at Eulaton United Methodist Church, located at 401 Westover Rd. Anniston, AL. Charlie Long, Greg Pate, Jeff Pope, Heath Shaddix, Rick Grove, Jim Toedte, Ed Toedte, Gary Toedte, and John Toedte will serve as pallbearers. A special thanks to Compassus Hospice of Hoover, Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, Russell Medical of Alex City, AL, and SouthernCare NewBeacon Hospice of Alex City for his excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Eulaton United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, at 401 Westover Rd Anniston, AL, or Anniston United Methodist Church, at 1400 Noble St Anniston, AL, in honor of George Toedte.
