George Boltz Hawthorne, III, was born in Atlanta, GA, December 19, 1953, at Saint Joseph’s Infirmary. His family lived in Atlanta until 1963 when they move to Massachusetts. His family relocated to Texas and back to Massachusetts before settling in Columbus Ga in 1972. While attending Bedford High School in Massachusetts, he wrote for the school’s literary magazine and newspaper, establishing his interest in Journalism. He developed a passion for music at a young age, and his enthusiasm for all genres persisted throughout his life. He started playing the trombone in middle school and continued his musical journey while studying Journalism at Auburn University. George married his former wife, Jeanette (Jenny), in Auburn, AL in March of 1985. George, Jenny, and her daughter, Janet (Jan) resided together in Oxford, AL. George and Jenny had their daughter, Julia, in August of 1989, and she completed his family. In Oxford, AL he was the General Manager of Pizza Hut for several years. He attended church and was a member of The Church of Saint Michael & All Angels. He was a dedicated servant for his community, and regularly volunteered for church charity events. He was also a volunteer and sponsor for his local A. A. chapter in Anniston, AL. He took pride in helping others find freedom from addiction. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #189 in Anniston, AL for many years. His hobbies included watching Auburn football and NASCAR racing. He rebuilt 2 cars as a teenager. His Dodge Coronet was qualified for straight track racing. He also had a passion for cooking and was a skilled amateur chef and grill master. George passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his former wife, Jeanette Chambers Trantham (D); daughter, Julia Hawthorne- Bledsoe (Nicholas R.); stepdaughter, Janet McGhar Bautista (David V.); step grandchildren, Lauren K. Bautista (fiancée Tyler Culberson) and Braedon C. Bautista; sister, Susan H. Knight (Barry “Phil”); nephew, William H. Knight (Tori S.); niece, Katherine K. Glass (Justin A.); great nephews, Logan A. Knight, Liam C. Knight and Jameson C. Glass; Uncle and Aunt, H. Wilson Hawthorne Sr. (Judy H.); cousins, H Wilson Hawthorne Jr, Amy Hawthorne, Cathy Hawthorne, Sam Hawthorne, Martha Ann L. McMickin, William (Billy) J. Lynn, Jr., Katherine L. Pierce, Jennifer (Bay) L. Allanson, and G. David Lynn. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Ethel Keenan Lynch and James Henry Lynch (maternal), and Martha Helena Rudisill Hawthorne and George Boltz Hawthorne, Sr. (paternal); parents, Ethel Lynch Hawthorne and George B. Hawthorne, Jr.; aunts and uncles, Sylvia (Cookie) L. Gosney (Donald A.) and Martha H. Lynn (William J.). The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 2:00pm until 3:00pm at Miller Funeral Home, 50 Hamric Drive East, Oxford, AL 36203. The funeral service will begin in the Toby Miller Chapel at Miller Funeral Home starting at 3:00pm. The graveside service will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, starting at 1:30pm at Frank McGuire Memorial Cemetery, 124 Lee Road #652, Auburn, AL 36832. Chaplain Jon Guthery will be officiating the services.
